Happy (540th!) birthday Copernicus

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 540th birthday of Copernicus who’s heliocenctric model of our solar system fundamentally changed how we see the world and man’s place in it.

In his 2006 book ‘Mirror Neurons and the Brain in the Vat’ V.S. Ramachandran suggests that Copernicus was the first of five major revolutions in our understanding of the world we live in.

Ramachandran  considered Darwin, Freud and DNA as equally significant discoveries and posited neuroscience as the fifth revolution and on a par with the preceding four.  Only time will tell if, in another 500 years, we are reflecting back on the early 21st century as another defining era in our understanding of what makes us who we are.
