The Human Connectome Project

The Human Connectome Project (HCP) gets some nice coverage from the BBC today.  One of the goals of the project is to ‘collect connectomic, behavioral, and genotype data using optimized methods in a representative sample of normal subjects’ and they are due to release the first data set from a sample of c100 people in the near future.

The images produced so far are stunning, if not necessarily very illuminating in themselves, and it remains to be seen if, when the  HCP has fully mapped the brain’s 100 billion neurons, each with about 10,000 connections we have the definitive answer to understanding human behaviour.
